Il “distretto industriale”, modello di
analisi economica caro a Giacomo Becattini, deve essere inteso come un
luogo caratterizzato da un insieme di piccole e medie imprese
specializzate immerse in una particolare atmosfera industriale. Nel
distretto esse beneficiano di forti vantaggi competitivi e di processi
innovativi che sono il frutto della identità economica e sociale del
territorio, della cultura del lavoro, dello spirito di appartenenza e
della sostanziale coesione sociale a cui contribuiscono anche le
istituzioni. Nell’ambito di questa definizione abbiamo provato a
mostrare come le vicende sociali, economiche e culturali di Prato
durante l’Ottocento siano testimonianza del graduale formarsi dei
connotati di fondo del distretto industriale.

The “industrial district”, a model of economic analysis
dear to Giacomo Becattini, should be understood as a place
characterised by a group of small and medium-sized specialised
companies immersed in a particular industrial atmosphere. In the
district, they benefit from strong competitive advantages and
innovative processes that are the result of the economic and social
identity of the area, the work culture, the spirit of belonging and the
substantial social cohesion to which the institutions also contribute.
In the context of this reflection, we have tried to show how the
social, economic and cultural events of Prato during the 19th century
bear witness to the gradual formation of the basic features of the
industrial district.
