This paper aims to trace the history of the nineteenth-century Piedmont hemp that, after the silk, was the main type of cloth of the Kingdom of Sardinia in the textile spinning industry of the time. The present study investigates the flows of cannabis sativa in the Savoy States and the consequences on the textile markets because of the competition with linen and cotton. In addition, it also examines the limitation of the cultivation of the hemp of Piedmont, as well as the attempts made to innovate this industry and sell the product in the United States. Finally, the research focuses on the disappearance of the Piedmont hemp from the leading French markets.
