Tra il 2004 ed il 2009, dopo circa un decennio di ricerche e di scritti
in materia, sono stati pubblicati in Italia ben quattro manuali di
storia ambientale. In tutti compare l’aggettivo “breve” nel titolo.
Partendo da questa singolare coincidenza, l’articolo ricostruisce le
modalità con cui emerge questo nuovo paradigma storiografico,
soffermandosi non solo sui contenuti dei quattro volumi, ma anche sui
problemi legati alla definizione degli statuti epistemologici e delle
possibili periodizzazioni, dei campi di ricerca, e dei rapporti della
storia ambientale sia con gli altri settori storici, che con le scienze
naturali.

Between 2004 and 2009, after a decade of research and publications,
four history books of environmental history were published in Italy.
The word “short” appears in all their titles. Starting from this
curious coincidence, this essay analyses, via the use of such books,
the way through which the new historical paradigm has been addressed in
Italy. The following piece of work will focus on issues of the likes of
epistemological definition, historical periodization, fields of
research, and the relationships between environmental history and other
areas of history and natural sciences.
