Nel corso dei primi decenni dell’Ottocento il servizio postale volge
verso una decisa modernizzazione a partire dai paesi dell’Europa
occidentale. L’introduzione del vapore, insieme con le numerose
acquisizioni tecnologiche che operano nel settore, risulta un elemento
fondamentale per la crescita delle spedizioni postali. La storia della
Overland Route descrive i primi tentativi, da parte di imprenditori e
grandi compagnie di navigazione, spesso sostenute da sussidi statali,
di stabilire un servizio regolare fra Gran Bretagna e India, in
un’ottica sia economica sia di egemonia politica globale.

During the first decades of the XIXth century the mail service moves
towards a very huge modernization, starting from the Western European
countries. The advent of steam, together with the several technological
achievements, which operated in this sector, seems to be a fundamental
agent for the growth of every postal dispatches. The history of the
Overland Route describes the first efforts, by single entrepreneurs and
big shipping companies, often subsided by the State, to establish, a
regular service between Great Britain and India, in a context both
economic and inspired to a global political hegemony.
